Stories of Hope

Behind every programme is a human story. These are voices from our community — proof that with support, every person can flourish.

Transformation That Speaks for Itself

Andhjan Kalyan Trust has touched over 1,500 lives since 1992. We share these stories — with the full consent of the individuals — to illustrate the power of education, rehabilitation, and community support.

Dharmistha's Journey to Independence

"I never thought I could use a computer. Now I use it every day for my work."

Dharmistha was born with severely limited vision. Growing up in a small village near Dhoraji, she had access to a mainstream school but struggled without appropriate learning materials. When her family learned about the Resource Centre programme at Andhjan Kalyan Trust, they brought her in for an assessment.

Through the Resource Centre, Dharmistha received Braille textbooks, a talking calculator, and one-on-one support from a trained resource teacher. Within two years, she was among the top students in her class — not despite her visual impairment, but alongside her sighted peers.

When she turned eighteen, she enrolled in the Computer Education Centre, where she mastered screen-reader software (NVDA and JAWS) and learned MS Office, email, and internet navigation. She now works as a data entry operator at a local NGO — financially independent and an inspiration to younger students at the Trust.

Zest of Life for Rahim

"Every small milestone he achieved was a celebration for the whole family."

Rahim joined AKTrust's Residential Care Centre with Cerebral Palsy and Mental Retardation. His recognition and language skills were quite poor when he first came to us, and his family had little hope for progress.

Through the hands-on care of trained special educators and therapists at the centre — combining speech therapy, physiotherapy, and daily life skills training — Rahim began to respond. Within the first year he showed marked improvement in his ability to communicate, recognise people around him, and carry out basic self-care tasks.

His family, who had once felt isolated and helpless, now participate actively in his ongoing therapy at the centre. Rahim's story is a reminder that with the right environment and consistent support, every child — regardless of the severity of their disability — can grow.

Kasim Takes His First Steps

"Before AKTrust, he could not stand. Now he walks."

Kasim is a seven-year-old boy who suffers from Cerebral Palsy. Before coming to AKTrust, he could neither stand nor walk, and also had significant speech problems. His parents had largely given up hope of him ever being mobile.

At AKTrust's Physiotherapy Centre, Kasim began a structured programme of physical therapy using electrical modalities — including muscle stimulation, short-wave diathermy, and guided movement exercises. The centre's physiotherapist worked with him daily alongside his parents, who were trained to continue exercises at home.

After one year of consistent therapy and care, Kasim is now able to stand independently and walk slowly with support. His speech has also improved noticeably. For his family, these milestones — once thought impossible — are a life-changing transformation.
